Nature Spirit Magic

Introduction

Each plant, animal, rock, and other entity has a spirit (consciousness resonance matrix). These spirits can join together, in a hive-mind, as a spirit of an area. Nature spirits include real biological intelligences, are psychically powerful, and are much less abstract and controllable than the Elementals that many magical people who perform all of their rituals indoors are familiar with. They can be extremely powerful allies. It is possible to sense nature spirits, to determine if they are receptive to a ritual planned, and to have them actively participate in magical workings if they are.

Some Effects Of Working With Nature Spirits

Spectacular physical manifestations can happen when working with nature spirits in the wild. I have personally seen actual foxfire mark the boundaries of a magic circle at a location that was identified as a receptive power spot and attuned to a planned ritual the day before. I have seen more than one site attuned for ritual be dry and comfortable, with a round hole in the clouds overhead, on days that were cold and rainy at other nearby locations. Birds have joined in rituals, flying around the circle when energy was being raised; and insects, birds and animals have joined in chants. In addition, the wind often responds to invocations. Generally, these spectacular manifestations happen unexpectedly.

With or without such manifestations, nature spirits often will channel tremendous amounts of power into the magic being performed. It is suggested that you do not consciously try for specific manifestations. Let Nature channel her power into the magic in her own way. If approached with respect, nature may give you many pleasant surprises.

Spectacular physical manifestations are not a necessary sign of success. If you need a spectacular manifestation and nature spirits know this, you will get it. The best success in magic is on the inner planes and more subtle than such manifestations. This success involves beneficial changes in consciousness that last and helpful chains of synchronicity. In addition, working with Nature Spirits can also bring a deep sense of partnership with Nature, and bring new levels of attunement.

To get the best results, perform nature spirit attunement several hours to several days before the main ritual. The purposes of such attunement are to find suitable power spots and to get the help of friendly nature spirits. This timing gives Nature time to gather her children and to prepare to actively participate in the main ritual.

What To Not Do

If nature spirits are approached with disrespect by attempting to command them rather than listening to them and inviting them to work with you, nature spirits may flee, rebel, or attack. I once attended a ritual by some pseudo-Crowleyites who attempted to perform the "Ritual of the Barbarous Names" at a power spot in a forest and then to extend the circle several hundred yards in all directions.

While the forest in general had loud insect and frog noises, the area at which the ritual took place got quiet immediately when the main ritualist declared that all spirits were subject unto him. The vibes from nature could best be characterized as "Oh yea, Mother!" One participant was quickly possessed by an angry spirit and kept repeating "You killed my children, your children will never live in peace." When the priestess stepped out of the boundaries of the original circle, she was attacked by bees; and bees covered the Book of the Law. Magicians should know better than to attempt to command spirits whose true names they do not know!

Calling Nature Spirits

To make the most out of working magical ritual in the wild, one should find power spots where nature spirits are receptive to the ritual planned and approach the spirits with respect, as equals. In my experience, the most effective power spots for working with the living intelligences of nature are located in wild areas with diverse, active ecologies.

When entering a wild area to find a site for a ritual, find a place that feels good. Then do the following, either individually or, if in a group, as a guided meditation:

Relax, while standing upright, and focus on your breathing. Breathe deep breaths from the diaphragm. Breathe together if in a group.

Feel the wind, and let it relax you and awaken your spirit within, as your deep breathing takes you into non-ordinary reality.

Picture, in your mind's eye, a light inside you. As you breathe, feel the light expand, purify and energize you - as it expands to fill your aura.

Feel yourself glowing, balanced, purified, and full of power.

Connect with your inner self (your higher self), and feel your intuitive self operating.

Feel yourself as:

The wind, full of life and intelligence, communicating with all round.

The Sunlight, warm, alive, channeling the power to communicate with nature and energizing all around.

Water, emotional, intuitive, refreshing, and connected with nature.

The Earth, and note how your physical body is able to wander while remaining part of Mother Earth.

Focus on your spiritual self, and:

Note the light within and feel it as love,

Expand the light and love beyond the immediate aura of your body to the surrounding area - where you will go to find a power spot and contact nature spirits.

Telepathically (by thinking while channeling the love and light energy) send out signals to nature spirits to emerge and be aware of your presence.

Say why you have come, and invite them to join in sharing, mutual celebration, and the work you intend.

Visualize the light and love energy you are channeling extending out and merging with the light from distant places.

Feel the power of the Earth flowing up through your body and feet.

Feel the power from the sky, and channel this power also to further energize the carrier signal of light and love for communicating with nature.

Visualize the light expanding and merging.

Continue to send out telepathic signals.

Now go deeper:

Close your eyes, sit on the Earth, and feel your connection while you channel more light and love.

Continue modulating the light and love with your thoughts - inviting receptive spirits to join with you and to make themselves known.

If in a group, someone should start playing a drum at a rate of about one beat per second; and you should listen to the drum and let the drum take you deeper.

Affirm that you are a nature magician, a medicine person, who knows and communicates with nature. Let this part of yourself emerge to full consciousness. Let the drum and the connection to your inner self awaken that part of yourself that naturally communicates with other life forms. Let it awaken your telepathic senses.

Continue sending telepathic signals to nature.

When you feel ready and an inner urge to begin, open your eyes a crack and look around, while continuing to channel love and light and telepathically calling for a response.

You may see light coming from certain areas that are receptive. You may get other signals, such as a feeling of power or love returning in a certain direction. Perhaps the type of response to this work will be unexpected; follow your intuition in interpreting it.

You may test your connection by communicating (mentally) instructions for signals for yes/no responses (such as light getting brighter for less and darker for no) and then mentally ask questions and observe the responses.

When you have found an areas that seems to be responsive and receptive, begin walking to the area, while beaming love energy. Extend your aura to the area and sense the energy.

Entering A Power Spot

Before entering a power spot, ask permission to enter. If the response is good, enter; if not, locate another more receptive area.
When entering the power spot, look around. Perhaps the responsive energy will be concentrated around some singularity (a bush, a tree, a specific branch, a moss covered rock, or other entity that stands out). Perhaps the energy will be more general. Use your intuition and feedback from the spirits to guide your actions.

If it feels right, send out a signal that you would like to touch the singularity (or the ground) for better communication. If the response is good, approach beaming love energy, and then touch or hug the singularity (or the ground).
Treat the spirits as you would other Pagans you meet for the first time - be sensitive, open, and listen.

Deepening Communication With Nature Spirits

Now that you have made contact with spirits that seem receptive, deepen the communication:

Breathe deep breaths from the diaphragm, and with each breath, feel more refreshed.

Now imagine that your spine is the trunk of a tree; and, from its base, roots extend deep into the Earth. Deep into the rich moist Earth.
With every breath, feel the roots extending deeper,

Feel the energy deep within the Earth and within the waters of the Earth. Feel your roots absorbing nourishment from the Earth and from its waters.

Feel the moist, warm energy rising.

Feel it bursting up from the Earth and rising up your spine, like sap rises in a tree.

Feel the energy rise to your crown chakra (at the top of your head).

Now imagine that you have branches, branches that sweep up and then bend down towards the Earth, like the limbs of a willow.

Feel the branches extending and interweaving with your surroundings.

Feel the warm, moist energy of the Earth flowing through your branches. As it flows, feel yourself being purified, centered, and connected to the Earth.

Feel the power from the Earth flowing through your branches and then down back to the Earth, like a fountain.

Note how your branches absorb energy from the air. Also, feel them receiving light (fire) from the sky.

Feel the energy from above penetrating deep through your body into the Earth.

Feel the warmth of the Earth rising also.

Feel the energy circulating.

Notice how your branches intertwine with the branches of energy surrounding you.

Feel the energy dancing among your branches and the branches around you.

Notice how your roots also intertwine with underground energy channels.

Feel the energy dancing between your roots and the surrounding energy patterns.

Notice how you and the life around you are rooted in the same Earth, breathing the same air, receiving the same fire, drinking the same water, sharing the same underlying essence. You are one with the magical grove.

Telepathically mention the time in the past when nature spirits and people communicated regularly and the need to establish such communication now.

Test your connection by asking questions and observing the responses.

Working With Nature Spirits

Explain to the spirits the purpose of your coming to them and the nature of the ritual you plan.

If the spirits you contacted are receptive:

Explain to them the details of the ritual and invite them to provide ideas.

Listen, you may receive suggestions on how to improve the ritual. Such suggestions may come in the form of hunches, visions, answers to yes/no questions using pre-arranged signals, or in other ways.

Explain what type of space is needed and ask what the best place to perform the ritual is.

You may see light or get other psychic signals leading you to other sites, or you may be at one of them.

You may also ask what the best places for other aspects of the planned work are (picnicking, individual vision quests, etc.).

If preparation of the site is needed (removing briars, preparing a fire circle, etc.) ask permission of the spirits before proceeding with such action.

Before you leave the power spot, tell the spirits you have contacted when you plan to return to do the ritual (visualizing the associated lunar and solar aspects can help with this communication).

Invite them to join in the ritual when you return and to bring their friends.

Ask if it would be best to return silently, with drums, with chanting, or with some other form of approach.

You can also ask the spirits to provide guidance for working in balance and to provide a teacher to provide further guidance.
Before you leave the power spot:

Thank the spirits,

Channel love energy,

Trigger your memory of the experience, and

If it feels right, leave an offering of tobacco, or beer and honey poured on the ground (or other suitable material).
Leave in peace and love.

Proceed to other sites that were indicated by the spirits, doing similar meditations at each site.

If you need something, like a staff, a Maypole, or a wand, you can also ask where you can find it and follow the guidance you receive (not slavishly, but as you would guidance from another Pagan).

Before leaving the general area in which you found power spots and contacted nature spirits:

Channel love energy towards the receptive sites you found,

Thank the spirits of the land,

Pull back your roots and branches,
Ground any excess energy into the Earth (placing your hands on the Earth, breathe in any excess energy, and channel the energy down your arms, while visualizing and feeling the energy going into the Earth), and

Leave in peace and love.

Naturally, you should leave the area at least as clean, and preferably cleaner, than you found it.

If you work with techniques of Wicca or Ceremonial Magic, you may find that by casting a circle, calling the Elements, the Goddess, the Gods, and the local nature spirits while you are at receptive sites, you may be able to greatly increase communication.

Through the use of drums and other power raising techniques, it is even possible to energize receptive nature spirits. The results can be very interesting. If with a coven, such circles can be done as part of a group attunement to a power spot you have located.

If you do not get good feelings in response to your explanation of the ritual and are unable to come up with a ritual that gives good responses, do not try to force a good response. You would only be fooling yourself.

Thank the spirits for their attention.
Ask them why they are not receptive (if it feels right and they are communicative).

Trigger your memory.

Pull back your "roots and branches," return any excess energy you feel into the Earth.

If it feels appropriate, leave an offering of tobacco or other appropriate material, out of respect for the spirits.

Move to a more receptive site.

If it is hard to find a site that is really receptive, you should:

Consider any impressions you got of why the nature spirits weren't receptive in the area you were in, and re-think your plans for a ritual, as necessary and appropriate.

It may also be appropriate to look for another general area in which to find a suitable power site that is receptive to the work planned.

What To Do When Returning

It can be very powerful to purify and center yourself and to attune to the spirits of the land using the techniques previously described for calling nature spirits immediately upon returning to the site.

Often, individuals may have found small specific power spots to which they have a special attunement, where the spirits are interested in participating; but where the site is too small, has too much vegetation, or is otherwise unsuitable for the main ritual. Individual attunement to the spirits in such areas and inviting them to participate in the main ritual can be worthwhile.

Then approach the main ritual site using the previously arranged technique. You should have the details worked out with the spirits of the land. An exceptionally powerful technique involves doing a procession through or past receptive power spots, inviting nature spirits to join as you pass each power spot, and then moving to the central power spot for the main ritual. If participants are at individual power spots, they can join the procession as it passes nearby.

When consecrating space in the wild, or casting a circle, do not set up the perimeter as a barrier to all outside forces; it should be a beacon to attract friendly nature spirits, a container for holding magical power, and a barrier to spirits who it isn't right to be with.
One thing that is fun and worthwhile in nature is to bring instruments, such as a rattle, a flute and/or a drum, to tune in to nature's sounds, and to make music in time to nature's sounds. You may be able to get some very interesting back and forth exchanges of music going with selected creatures of the wild, and get into an amazing jam session.

After the work is complete, be sure to thank the spirits for their participation. Libations and other offerings may also be left for the spirits during and/or after the ritual.

Sacred Woods and Trees

To the Celts and many other peoples of the old world, certain trees held special significance as a fuel for heat, cooking, building materials and weaponry. In addition to this however, many woods also provided a powerful spiritual presence. The specific trees varied between different cultures and geographic locations, but those believed to be "sacred" shared certain traits. Unusual size, beauty, the wide range of materials they provided, unique physical characteristics, or simply the power of the tree's spirit could grant it a central place in the folklore and mythology of a culture. Even our modern culture finds that certain trees capture our imagination. The mighty oak, the mystical yew and so many others are reminders of the power that trees have on our lives.

Trees are living things, filled with the essence and energy and of the Elementals and Mother Earth with an aura of power which is visible to those who are in total balance and harmony. The lore which surrounds a particular tree or wood often reflects the power the old ones sensed and drew from their presence.

ALDER - This tree was sacred to the Druids. The pith is easily pushed out of green shoots to make whistles. Several shoots bound together by cordage, can be trimmed to the desired length for producing the note you want and used to entice Air elementals. The old superstition of "whistling up the wind" began with this custom.

APPLE - (Domestic) Another sacred tree to the Druids. It is said that you may cut an apple into three pieces, then rub the cut side on warts, saying: "Out warts, into apple." Then bury the pieces and as the apple decays, the warts will disappear. Use apple cider in any old spells calling for blood or wine. Apple indicates choice, and is useful for love and healing magic.

ASH - A Druid sacred tree. Druid wands were often made of ash because of its straight grain. Ash wands are good for healing, general and solar magic. Put fresh ash leaves under your pillow to stimulate psychic dreams.

BIRCH - Known as Lady of the Woods, Paper Birch and White Birch. Carefully gather strips of the bark at the New Moon. With red ink, write on a birch strip: "Bring me true love." Burn this along with a love incense, saying "Goddess of love, God of desire, Bring to me sweet passion's fire." The specific name of a god/goddess may be added. Or cast the bark into a stream or other flowing water, saying: "Message of love, I set you free, to capture a love and return to me."

REMEMBER: It is unwise to use this incantation and ritual directed toward a specific person as that would violate the rule. If a love is to come to you, it must be of that persons free will to do so. Please see the Love and the Use of Magick page for more discussion of this subject.

BLACKTHORN - Blackthorn is a winter tree. Its white flowers are seen even before the leaves in the spring. It is black barked with vicious thorns and grows in dense thickets. The wood is used in the cudgel shillelagh and Blasting Stick. Its thorns are used to pierce waxen images. Blackthorn indicates strong action of fate or outside influences that must be obeyed.

BROOM - Also known as Scotch Broom or Irish Broom. It can be substituted for furze (gorse) at the Spring Equinox. The Irish called it the "Physician's power" because of its diuretic shoots. Sweep your outside ritual areas with it to purify and protect. Burning the blooms and shoots calms the wind. Be cautious if you plant Broom however, it will quickly multiply....

CEDAR - Also known as the Tree of Life, Arbor Vitae, Yellow Cedar. Ancient Celts on the mainland used cedar oil to preserve the heads of enemies taken in battle. To draw Earth energy and ground yourself, place the palms of your hands against the ends of the leaves.

ELDER - Also known as Ellhorn, Elderberry, Lady Elder. Sacred to the White Lady and Midsummer Solstice. The Druids used it to both bless and curse. Standing under an elder tree at Midsummer, like standing in a Fairy Ring of mushrooms, will help you see the "little people." Elder wands can be used to drive out evil spirits or thought forms. Music on panpipes or flutes of elder have the same power as the wand. Remember the words of the Rede. Elder is the Lady's Tree, burn it not or cursed ye be!

ELM - A slightly fibrous, tan colored wood with a slight sheen. Elm is often associated with Mother and Earth Goddesses, and was said to be the abode of faeries, explaining Kipling's injunction; "Ailim be the lady's tree; burn it not or cursed ye'll be". Elm wood is valued for it's resistance to splitting, and the inner bark was used for cordage and chair caning. Elm adds stability and grounding to a spell.

FIR - Fir is a very tall slender tree that grows in mountainous regions on the upper slopes. Fir cones respond to rain by closing and the sun by opening. Fir can see over great distance to the far horizon beyond and below. Fir indicates high views and long sights with clear vision of what is beyond and yet to come.

FIR (SILVER) - Also known as the Birth Tree. The needles are burned at childbirth to bless and protect the mother and baby.

FURZE - Also known as Gorse, Whin. Its golden flowers are associated with the Spring Equinox. Wood and blooms are burned for protection and preparation for conflict of any sort.

HAWTHORN - Also known as May Tree and White Thorn. Wands made of this wood are of great power. The blossoms are highly erotic to men. Hawthorn can be used for protection, love and marriage spells.

HAZEL - Wands made of this wood symbolize white magick and healing. Forked sticks are used to find water or buried treasure. If outside and in need of magickal protection quickly draw a circle around yourself with a hazel branch. To enlist the aid of plant fairies, string hazelnuts on a cord and hang up in your house or ritual room. Magically, hazel wood is used to gain knowledge, wisdom and poetic inspiration.

HOLLY - A beautiful white wood with an almost invisible grain; looks very much like ivory. Holly is associated with the death and rebirth symbolism of winter in both Pagan and Christian lore and is important to the Winter Solstice. In Arthurian legend, Gawain (representing the Oak King of summer) fought the Green Knight, who was armed with a holly club to represent winter. It is one of the three timbers used in the construction of chariot wheel shafts. It was used in spear shafts also. The qualities of a spear shaft are balance and directness, as the spear must be hefted to be thrown the holly indicates directed balance and vigor to fight if the cause is just. Holly may be used in spells having to do with sleep or rest, and to ease the passage of death. A bag of leaves and berries carried by a man is said to increase his ability to attract women.

JUNIPER - Its berries were used with thyme in Druid and Grove incenses for visions. Juniper grown by the door discourages thieves. The mature berries can be strung and hung in the house to attract love.

MISTLETOE - Also known as Birdlime, All Heal and Golden Bough. It was the most sacred tree of the Druids, and ruled the Winter Solstice. The berries are poisonous! Bunches of mistletoe can be hung as an all-purpose protective herb. The berries are used in love incenses.

OAK - Oak has been considered sacred by just about every culture that has encountered the tree, but it was held in particular esteem by the Celts because of its size, longevity, and nutritious acorns. The oak was the "King of Trees" in a grove. Magick wands were made of its wood. Oak galls, known as Serpent Eggs, were used in magickal charms. Acorns gathered at night held the greatest fertility powers. The Druids and Priestesses listened to the rustling oak leaves and the wrens in the trees for divinatory messages. Burning oak leaves purifies the atmosphere. It can be used in spells for protection, strength, success and stability; the different varieties will lend their own special 'flavor' to the magic.

PINE - The Pine tree is an evergreen, its old title was "the sweetest of woods." It was known to the Druids as one of the seven chieftain trees of the Irish. Mix the dried needles with equal parts of juniper and cedar and burn to purify the home and ritual area. The cones and nuts can be carried as a fertility charm. A good magickal cleansing and stimulating bath is made by placing pine needles in a loose woven bag and running bath water over it. To purify and sanctify an outdoor ritual area, brush the ground with a pine branch.

ROWAN - Also known as Mountain Ash, Witchwood and Sorb Apple has long known as an aid and protection against enchantment. Sticks of the Rowan were used to carve Runes on. Rowan spays and crosses were placed over cattle in pens and over homes for protection. Its lovely red berries feed the birds in winter. The berries have a tiny pentagram on them and are especially poisonous. The pentagram is the ancient symbol of protection. The Rowan tree indicates protection and control of the senses from enchantment and beguiling. The Rowan was sacred to the Druids and the Goddess Brigit. It is a very magical tree used for wands, rods, amulets and spells. A forked Rowan branch can help find water. Wands are for knowledge, locating metal and general divination.

WILLOW - Also known as White Willow, Tree of Enchantment and Witches' Aspirin. Once of the seven sacred trees of the Irish, a Druid sacred Tree. The willow is a Moon tree sacred to the White Lady, Its groves were considered so magickal that priests, priestesses and all types of artisans sat among these trees to gain eloquence, inspiration, skills and prophecies. For a wish to be granted, ask permission of the willow, explaining your desire. Select a pliable shoot and tie a loose knot in it while expressing what you want. When the wish is fulfilled. return and untie the knot. Remember to thank the willow and leave a gift.

YEW - Also known as English Yew and European Yew. Another important tree to the Winter Solstice and the deities of death and rebirth. It is a beautifully smooth, gold-colored wood with a wavy grain. The Irish used it to make dagger handles, bows and wine barrels. The wood or leaves were laid on graves as a reminder to the departed spirit that death was only a pause in life before rebirth. All parts of the tree are poisonous except the fleshy covering of the berry, and its medicinal uses include a recently discovered treatment for cancer. The yew may be the oldest lived tree in the world. Ancient yews can be found in churchyards all over Britain, where they often pre-date even the oldest churches. There are some convincing arguments for it being the original 'World-tree' of Scandinavian mythology. The Yew may be used to enhance magical and psychic abilities, and to induce visions

The Different Types Of Animal Totems: Appearances, Messages, and Impact For Witches, Pagans & Native Americans

How The Different Kinds Of Animal Totems Vary

Throughout our lives we encounter various animal totems dropping in. The appearance of such animal totems will vary in where they show up, how they show up and above all, what their message may be to us. It is up to the individual to understand what the meaning and message may be. Once that is done, we can work with how it will affect us on various levels.

The particular animal totem species that appears also signifies a message and meaning. Here we are not going into the details of the animal totem species, but the types of animal totems.

Below you will find the descriptions of the various animal totems. This is basic information that has been shared with me over the years from the wisdom and experience of others.

Keep in mind that all animal totems are unique in nature and their set parameters that research shows may not always be how a particular animal totem will interact with you on your spiritual levels as well as on daily experience levels.

Journey Animal Totem

This one works with you for a period of time. It could be days, weeks, months, a year or more, however long it takes for you to walk the path the totem is trying to show you. You'll find during this time that the animal is always showing up in your life, whether it be in pictures, on TV, in person, etc. It's like you can't seem to get away from it! You might also find a time where you have more than one animal appearing in your life and then find out that they are all teaching a similar message. You recognize something is going on here. Chances are it is a big lesson you need to learn. A Journey totem can come and go from your life over the years. Maybe you have changed paths and are working with a different animal and then all of a sudden your old buddy reappears. They are there for a lesson.

Lifelong Animal Totem

This one works with you throughout your whole life, much like a guardian angel does. It is always there for you and reminds you of your connectedness. Whereas our guardian angel is usually with us when we are born, our Life animal totem can enter at any time during our life and then stay with us. The messages your Life totem brings are somewhat like reminders - reflecting your inner spiritual nature.

Message Animal Totem

This one usually brings you a message of self-growth or spiritual importance. Not to say the others don't, but this totem animal brings specific messages and then may leave you. It's like getting a wake-up call or a slap in the face sometimes. It tends to make its presence felt at an unusual time or place, and its impact is almost always very powerful. Whether you listen to its message or not is up to you.

Tobacco & Cornmeal Banishing & Protection Ceremony

Protection & Banishing Ceremony with Native American Roots

In September of 2015 a dark entity of sorts came to dwell on our property.  It could certainly be felt by us humans and all wildlife.  Almost all our two legged and four legged animal friends would not come around during the day when the evil energy was the strongest.

We knew that we had to do a banishing as well as a protection ceremony to not only rid the property of the entity/being, but to prevent it from coming back.

It had already preyed on one small crippled animal and caused its death prematurely.  As mentioned all other animals were being warned off by the “feeling” and sensing of the dark and evil presence.

We know at night evil and dark energies are their weakest because of all the nocturnal animals that come out and offer protection from sunset to sunrise.  It is these animals that we give food offerings to for what they provide.  This gave us the setting for the ritual, after dark and close to the full moon.

We were blessed to be able to do it at almost the 100 percent full moon, one day before we had the Blood Moon or Red Moon.  We performed the below cleansing, sealing and protection ceremony on September 26, 2015.

The below ceremony is written by myself for two participants.  On this occasion we had a third participant that sprinkled salt, played a rainmaker and held the light so we did not stumble and fall as it was a large perimeter that we had to walk.

Items Needed:

  • Sage (or sweet-grass or cedar) for smudging
  • Cornmeal
  • Tobacco
  • (Placed in bowl or container that can easily be carried)

Before starting, smudge bodies of all participants to protect them while you are doing this ritual/ceremony.  Do not forget to do the feet.

First do the honoring of the four directions outdoors. Near the main entry is good, but where you can see the sky.  Tobacco is the only offering here.

Each direction you face sprinkle tobacco and say "Oh Great Spirit bless this place and protect it from harm and evil spirits. Take away any that would harm the two-legged or four-legged this is a place of beauty and spiritual peace not to be soiled by the unclean lurkers."

The tobacco will go first, then the cornmeal when doing the below. Start the circle at the north, ending at the north, leaving an opening (gate) as explained below.

As you walk the circle the tobacco sprinkler will say while lightly sprinkling, " "You do not belong I banish you in the name of all that is good, in the name of the Gods and Goddesses, in the name of the Creator."

The cornmeal sprinkler with say while lightly sprinkling, "In the name of the Great Spirit I ask that this place be protected." (this person can also ask for other things, or a second person can also sprinkle the cornmeal and include any personal requests)

Leave a small opening as you complete the circle referred to as the Gate.   Walk around this area with the smudge. You can sing any kind of song if you want or just chant softly. At this time you can also do any additional petitioning.

When done two of you will face each other, like gate posts, one with the tobacco and the other with the cornmeal.  Say, “Oh Great Spirit bless this place and protect it from harm and evil spirits. Take away any that would harm the two-legged or four-legged this is a place of beauty and spiritual peace not to be soiled by the unclean lurkers. May nothing evil remain and may this seal out the evil spirits and unclean ones.  May this bless this place.”  Then conclude with the sprinkling of tobacco first then cornmeal, sealing the gate.

As mentioned the above has Native American roots, but has a mix of Paganism in the for of Wicca in there as well. Many of the same things are worked with by all Pagans, including Native Americans. The directions, colors, honoring, offering and giving thanks.

Note: The wording provided in bold was offered by an elder from Canada....a wise woman.

Danger and Impending Doom Scenarios - Why Are They There?

There is a Lakota Prophecy that states the beast will reign for 2000 years: consume and control everything and just when you think there is no hope the beast consumes itself. Then the thousand years of peace comes along with a reunion with the Star Nations. There are ancient rock paintings showing one world being consumed by the other the snake eating itself and a movement into the fifth world. Crop circles which show two worlds coming together also speak of the future. There is no doubt we are on the fast track now and close to an evolutionary leap or shift in consciousness and dimension.

Einstein said," Space and time are not conditions in which we live, they are modes in which we think."

Buddha said," We are what we think, all that we are arises in out thoughts, with our thoughts we create the world."

Jesus said, "As you believe, so it is."

What all these great minds are saying is as we evolve in consciousness so does the world in which we live. I have often spoken of the vibrational continuum where consciousness is lowered into light then energy and once again into mass. Mass is more empty space than anything else and there are times it is a wave, other times it is a particle. In the ultimate reality it is condensed consciousness, the slower the vibration the more solid or what some call real it becomes. What happens when the vibration increases to dense physical matter? It becomes more malleable, more reactive, we have more control over the form it takes. This is what is happening on the planet. As the consciousness and frequencies rise we will have more control of our environment. We magnetize people and events to us according to our consciousness. Our bodies are not ruled by genes but by consciousness. Being unconscious of this allows them to run amuck and react to the environment rather than taking charge and creating what we wish to experience. The same goes with our outer world.

What the masters are saying is take charge of your world. Move into creationary mind rather than reactionary mind. Did you know there is no such word as Creationary? Run a spell check on it. Did you know you are bombarded with messages of fear, danger and impending doom for a reason? It is to keep you in a frequency that can be controlled. Where is the good news, the hope, the new breakthroughs in healing, quantum physics, the fact that we are not alone in the universe? You don't hear of these for a reason.

There is a war in consciousness. There are those who know the only way to control the masses is through fear. These controllers also know their time is short and a greater consciousness is manifesting. It is beyond their control and their efforts through technological and mental deviation will be futile. It is a greater power and it moves in mysterious ways. It is natural, a spiritual force and part of our destiny to evolve with it not stand against it. Have you seen what happens when you stand against Nature? Nature always has her way, she is often slow to react but thorough when she does. Have you ever tried to deceive an enlightened one, transgress against them? The reaction is almost instantaneous. Can you imagine trying to deceive the Creator what ever name you wish to give it. The intelligent designer has a plan for these folks. Rest assured there is a plan.

It may get darker before the dawn but this is part of the great uncovering. Tyranny will be exposed on every level; it will experience the reactions to its actions which will be increased exponentially. Those who have aligned themselves with Tyranny will not find a place to hide. No underground bunker, no off world base, there will be no place in the universe to run. You cannot run from yourself. Those who have been willing participants in the plans of the tyrants will also experience the same fate. There will be some very embarrassed politicians, corporations based upon greed and profit at the expense of humanity and nature will be exposed along with all their puppets. The Earth will do what she must to cleanse and heal herself and a greater brother/sisterhood that loves you greatly will come forward in the days to come. There will not be a nuclear war, it will not be allowed because the people will turn their backs on the fear and warmongers. There also will be watchers that will not allow it; part of an unseen group waiting in the wings. You will see unprecedented change in the days to come. It will happen on every level. Now is the time to awaken, listen and act with loving detachment. This is the best advice we can give in the days to come.

Boundaries And The Spirit Of Place

The Earth is a place where each species, tribe, or group creates new symbols of its values.  Groups have territories. Mountains and rivers create natural boundaries, but so do language, symbols, and rites. The mountains, rivers, and valleys themselves are often given names that reveal their spiritual essence.

Culture works in a dialectic. All types of cultures circulate vital force and consciousness in different ways.  The thesis of a culture is its identity, how it distinguishes itself in tools, languages, and art.  The antithesis is the tension created by differences in identity between cultures.  The synthesis reveals how these tensions are resolved and integrated into a medley of values and cultural ways.  A fourth phase, which I call paradox, is reached only where the values of a culture reach beyond differences, or even resolutions, to the source, the One.  Whether expressed in sacred art, rite, or political action, paradox is a sacred act, a realization of the gift of a culture's endowment.  It is a reciprocation that brings streams of renewal and creativity.

Territory, or earth-mapping, is expressed through a dialectic as well.  Territories can exist in isolation - such as a village in a desert or wilderness - or they can be tangent to each other, marked by political, racial, or cultural boundaries.  The antithesis always emphasizes separation, the tension of differences.  The spatial synthesis of a territory is in the concept of a commons or shared city-center where boundaries overlap.  People of diverse nationalities and races may meet in a shared environment to which they all contribute.  A paradox is revealed wherever the sacred is recognized as the real ruler of the land.  This is called spirit of place.

The spirits of place reveal the specific qualities of subtle energy in the landscape - how the dragon vein flows.  They abound in rivers, mountains, trees, and caves.  Their presence is felt in native, archaic, and ancient mythology.  The Eskimos tell of Sedna, the Sea Spirit in charge of all sea creatures.  The spirits of the Earth and sky were invoked by the Iroquois, and through this invocation they found the wampum bird.  The sylphs and gnomes of fairy tales, the devas that weave subtle energy and light into elemental energy and states, can wait out human mismanagement and direct the recovery of the world.  But if we are to participate, we must ask them to share their power, and then listen.

One way I envision the way to invite them to share their powers is to simply create a sacred circle, and invite them in to share, and above all, as stated, LISTEN.

Responsibilitly of the Elders of the Pagan Paths

The Youth and New Ones are our future

This is a great and powerful time for the Earth and Nature based beliefs. Whether you call yourself Wiccan, Pagan, Witch, Shaman or Neo-something, we are seeing a greater return and flowing toward these beliefs than at any other time in history. Thousands of people both young and old reach out to us seeking answers, searching for the truth and fellowship with others of like mind. Without exception, these people are hearing the voices of our ancestors and they are listening to the gentle voice of the Lord and Lady which echo's in their soul. For those of us who have traveled this path for a time, this is the beginning of a new era and one which requires a change in our thought processes. I will speak to this in greater detail later.

My experience from talking with others has shown, that while many of us are out of the proverbial "Broom Closet," when talking with close friends who share our beliefs, we quite often play our cards close to the vest when dealing with others outside our close circle of friends. In many cases, this is still a necessity because of family or work considerations, however it carries over into our dealings with other followers of our community with whom we have not become comfortable. With the dawn of this new era, we must shed these apprehensions to move forward and embrace those just becoming enlightened to the voices of our ancestors.

Hopefully, those of you who have walked this path for a time, can remember how confused and unsure you were when beginning you journey. Like myself, there is a possibility that you wrestled with the emotional conflicts between what you had always been led to believe by the unaware, and what your heart was telling you. You probably also were unsure where to start reading and learning even though there were only a hand full of books or so to choose from.

Today it is just as confusing to the new seekers of truth and information if not more so. They still struggle with the same emotional conflicts as we did, yet there are several hundred books to choose from and relatively few of us willing to step far enough away from the shadows to offer advice and guidance in making the right choices. It is an intimidating situation for them to say the least.

This is the area where I want to nudge your comfort zones and present a concept which you may not have thought about.

Earlier, I said that those of us who have followed this path must change our thought processes. In considering this, we must come to understand that the beginning followers of the Earth and Nature beliefs we see today are the new generation. These are the people who are coming forward to learn, understand, embrace and dispel the centuries of superstition and misconception which surround our beliefs. Therefore, we must move forward to embrace the next generation. We must move forward to assume the role of mentors and guides.

If we ever hope to achieve understanding and acceptance of our beliefs to build unity within our scattered communities, WE MUST shoulder the responsibility of ensuring THAT future becomes a reality. We simply cannot sit idle and hope those who follow will understand the true meaning of our ways without adequate guidance.

As with any rite or ritual, we know from experience that the realization of our intent and will is totally dependent upon the energy we pour into that working. We must then understand that that ensuring a positive future for our ways is no different. We will get back exactly what energy we put into the Cauldron of the future.

We are the Elders of the Wiccan, Pagan and Witchcraft community, and we are the future Wise One's of the past. If we do not teach our traditions, values, morals and ethics of the old ways, who will?

I receive many request each and every month of new ones seeking information. Each and every one represents our future reaching a hand out to us, the Elders, the Wise One's of these paths for guidance and answers. They are willing to understand, accept and follow this path, if we will only take the time to truthfully answer their questions and guide them from our wisdom and experience.

Understand this clearly my friends. They are the future, our legacy, the ones who are reaching out to change the centuries of myth, superstition and misconception which we and those before us have sought for so long.

So as you surf the Internet or encounter one who is new to our ways, embrace them with love and make the connection with their spirit. I urge you to not pass them by, but to reach out and take that hand if even only momentarily to answer a question or offer reassurance. Let the love of the Lord and Lady fill your spirit and move a few steps further away from the shadows. Assume your place as one of the teachers of Strength, Honor, Harmony and Balance. Come forward to help bring the Lady's children home to the warmth and security of her bosom.

I charge you to step from the shadows and take your place within the Circle to escort the dawn of a new day for our beliefs.

At Night The Rabbits Will Play

Lessons learned can come from the most unexpected places!

For a long time, I was lost and I wandered all along the countryside looking to find my way. I knew that I had to go North, but I had gotten all turned around and did not know which direction was North.

One morning I saw that the birds were singing and one group of beautiful birds in particular caught my attention with all their song and flew up over a hillside near some fragrant evergreens. As the sun rose brighter and warmer, I saw the path. It was a clay covered road and it smelled that good strong earthy smell.

It took me half the day to arrive at the red road and the sun was high in the sky by now. My stomach growled from the day's journey so I sat down on a large boulder, yellowish in color, and ate the sandwich that I had packed. I looked up and saw a large bird circling above me. Its head was a light color, maybe even white. It may have been Eagle, but I was not sure.

I looked at the road at my feet. I wanted to do a celebration dance for having found this place because I knew it was exactly what I had been searching for. This road led North and I knew in my heart that there would be many treasures here along my journey.

After lunch, leaving a few bites for Boulder and the critters who might happen to come here and feel the hunger that I had, I straightened my clothing and tied back my hair and walked. One foot in front of the other, sometimes skipping, sometimes inching along. By evening, with the sunset glowing in its deepest shades of reds and oranges and some streaks of pinks, the path led me alongside a thickly wooded grove.

I could hear a stream gurgling up ahead, yet to my left, my attention was distracted by the sweet call of berries. I knew that if I stayed on my path, I would find fresh water to quench my undeniable thirst and maybe even a fish for my dinner.

Against my better judgment I left the path and found the berries. I tasted one at first and finding them so delicious, I grabbed handfuls and stuffed them in my mouth. So sweet, so tasty! Satisfying my sweet cravings, I was ready to once again walk on the path. Yet, as I was so involved with finding the ripest, most delicious berries, I had weaved and intertwined myself so deeply into the thicket that I had once again lost my way back to the path.

I began walking in circles, panicking and afraid of never finding the path. I even thought "what if it actually never existed, what if it was all just a dream?" Then of all horrid things, I doubled over in pain as my belly heaved and bloated in the worst case of gas ever and finally exhorted itself from me with the worst smelling trail of stench ever! I tried jogging to avoid the smell of those gas-producing berries and yet the wind always seemed to change direction and blow it right in my face.

All at once, I froze in utter fear. Just ahead, I could hear a rustling in the tall grasses and the threatening growl of Bear. I suddenly realized that I was trampling all over Bear's territory and that I had been emitting a smell that would make any animal want to get rid of me. I started running when Bear saw me and I kept running until I was nearly all out of breath. Lo and behold, that Bear had chased right back to my path. While I had feared never finding it again, Bear showed me the way.

Once again on the trail that would lead me to the waters gurgling up ahead, I contemplated the lesson I had learned. First, I knew that my goal was to stay on my path. Second, I now knew that some temptations are sweet and delicious but will cause a big pain in the belly. Sometimes those temptations are quite deceptive and other times, you can tell right away by the thorns to just stay away. Third, I learned that Bear will always show me the way back to the path.

By the time I reached the fresh water, I had an unquenchable thirst and drank until my body flowed with liquid once again. I laid out my gear to rest here awhile as I could tell by the sky that it was almost midnight. I was ready for a good long sleep and dream-time after my exciting journey of lessons.

I took out my tobacco and offered it to the directions and thanked Bear in the West for helping me find my way back to the trail. As I laid on the ground and watched the stars, I noticed some movement near me. I sat up halfway, very slowly to see what it was. There, only a few feet from me, were two rabbits. They were chasing one another in circles. First, one would chase the other and then they would turn and the one who had been chased became the one chasing. It was delightful to watch the rabbits play this night. As I laid back down and closed my eyes, I thought "at night the rabbits will play". In the morning, the birds will sing. It is good.

The Soul's Call

Listening To And Knowing The Soul: A Native American Perspective

Upon the wings of night,

What dreams enter our heart,

Who can hear? Who can hear?

Our hearts as big as the Universe,

Our Souls as wide as time.

Proclaimed in many spaces,

Calling unto our shells,

Hear me! Hear me!

For all the truths you follow outside,

They are but lies in the sun.

Truth is in the heart of the soul,

Bestowed on all, bestowed in all,

A great gift, oft untouched.

Then why so many abandoned hearts?

So many give way the soul,

Every ounce of control,

To concrete and ivory towers,

That darken the skies before it is night,

That darken the waters,

No longer reflecting light.

Why can you not see me here?

Hear me. I call unceasingly,

I speak in the winds,

From the four directions I come.

Sense me from the East,

I inspire you,

In my illuminating fire.

Touch me from the West,

I draw you to reflection,

In the deepest caves.

Feel me from the South,

I play tag with you,

In waves of love.

Know me from the North,

I open you, to Me,

The eyes of wisdom.

The heavy eyes of Wisdom.

For once seeing, the world changes,

never the same again.

I am of the Sun,

I heal you.

I am of the Moon,

I guide you.

Know me in fire,

The inspiration of your heart.

Feel me in water,

The flow of your soul.

Know me in air,

The wings of your mind.

Feel me in earth,

You are Me in flesh.

Hear me, I am White Buffalo,

Who's Sacred Wisdom,

Is knowing the ways of peace.

I am Golden Eagle that dares you to fly high,

To touch your dreams,

To heed my call to freedom.

Hear me I am the Ancient Owl,

The eyes of many realms.

I see thru all realities,

With eyes that penetrate darkness,

With inner light.

Hear me, I am the Bear,

I call unto you,

Come unto me, that you might understand

who I am.

I am Soul,

A dolphin seeking the waters of your heart.

I am the Red Deer of gentle dawns.

I am Spider,

Weaving the sacred threads of this life.

You will never find me in some defined place,

or theology.

You shall never find me on some distant shore,

or place of any kind.

Fear, drives me away.

Anger stills my voice.

Unkindness brings me tears.

Judgment weighs heavy upon times sands.

Bitterness turns the heart cold,

Leaving no place then to rest my head.

For I am Soul, and we are one.

Silence is my resting place.

When chaos lifts its head,

And peace can not be heard,

Drowned out by noisy Crows.

Crows in the Head.

Crows in the world of the dead,

Closed hearts, broken dreams.

Come, I am Raven fly with me,

Into the Void of Silence.

I am the potential of all thou art,

A dream of Great Mystery in the making.

I am the place of knowing.

I am the very Core of you.

When I walk the world,

I gather what others scattered,

And scatter what others gather.

Look as you may,

You shall never see me on the path of waste.

You shall only find me amongst the creations of life.

Only there you will find me.

Only there will we meet.

Together we can create a world of peace.

Together we can build a rainbow bridge,

Dropping along the way,

Dream stones of many colors.

As one by one the bridge takes form,

Others will pick them up,

and if they listen,

The stones weave ancient stories of memory.

For in memory shall they come,

In dreams they shall remember.

And when they do,

The bridge shall be there waiting,

to cross over to the other shore.

How To Smudge - First Nation's Style

There are times that you need to cleanse yourself and your environment of negative energies as well as for healing and protection.  One of my favorite techniques is smudging to accomplish such things.  It is based on intent, as with all magic(k) and spellwork and is relatively easy to implement.  I was going to write an article to cover how this is accomplished by myself, however, I found a video that shares the concept of how I smudge myself.  I hope this helps.  Any questions, feel free to ask in comment, and I will get back with you as soon as possible.

The Living Earth

We have an ancient and indigenous awareness of the Earth as a living being. We attune to her through our rhythmic sleeping and waking and our receptivity to the magnetic, solar, and elemental forces. Her tectonic, ionic, magnetic and organic systems are analogous to those of our bodies.

Let's consider the metaphorical relationship of our body systems to the five elements that I work with in my healing and magickal work, as well as of the ancient Greeks. (The Chinese and Hindus also use five elements of different names.) The solar and fiery element corresponds to our nervous system. The airy and gaseous element is related to our breathing, vocalization, and hearing, and the watery element to our circulatory and lymphatic systems. The earthly element is related to our skeletal and muscular systems. Our chakra system, which receives cosmic energy, is most related to the ether element. I have recently been asked, "How do these elements and bodily processes affect our relationship with the Earth as a living organism?" The following is an explanation from my perspective.

Fire:  We experience the fire element in the desert, the flowers, the auroras, and lightening, which are manifestations of the Earth's eye, brain, and nervous system. We ourselves are electromagnetic systems that are affected by electromagnetic charges in the environment. Electricity is a conduit in both our nervous system and in hour chemical processes.

From fire comes light and darkness, the sources of color. Our eyes receive light waves from the Sun and convert them into photochemical and biochemical pulses which then are decoded by the brain. Both electromagnetism in the body and the light in the eyes are sourced from the Sun.

The Sun itself is like a rotating pinwheel, flinging fiery particles out into space. Upon entering the zones of the poles, these radiated energies stimulate the atmospheric molecules to glow in the auroras - somewhat like gas in a neon tube. The fire of the electrically charged particles from the Sun is deflected by the Van Allen Belt - a ring of particles and cosmic energy that penetrates the outer layers of the Earth's magnetosphere. The magnetosphere acts as the Earth's brain, receiving messages from the Sun and decoding them. Magnetism then enters and exits through the planet's deep interior through the poles.

Volcanic matter is a mutable fireflow within the bones and heart of the Earth. The fire of the desert is part of the Earth's metabolic heating and cooling system. Here, seeds drift before the Sun and reach for the dew in the morning. Underground waters, like blood, upwell in hidden places under the searing Sun.

Air:  The air element consists of all the atmospheric manifestations - the jet stream, the clouds, the rain and the biosphere cycles. Weather, wind, and sound all shape the energy of air. As temperatures change, hot air drifts up and the cooling air sinks down, creating a gaseous swirl. Air particles drift with the clouds, creep across mountains, and sweep into canyons as the breath of the Earth.

Cosmic rays descend through the etheric noctilucent clouds that spread between the ionosphere and mesosphere and fan out towards the ozone layer. Below the ozone is the stratosphere, where mother-of-pearl clouds suspend in midair. Miles below that are the cirrus and cumulonimbus clouds. Below these lies the naked Earth, receiving rain.

The ozone umbrella is the Earth's most far-reaching spiritual aura. Ozone protects us from ultraviolet rays, converting them into heat and chemical energy. Radioactive fallout from nuclear testing and fluorocarbide residue from industrial production have caused ozone depletion, gouging holes in the Earth's auric field and exposing all life to disease.

The Earth's breath gives voice through the sounds of the winds, tides, and creatures. Sound arises from the rhythmic compression of air particles in vibrating bodies. All such molecular movement creates sound, though it may not be heard by human ears.

Water:  Water is the lifeblood of the Earth, as it is to us. Holy creatures slither and swim in the flowing dance of rivers and seas. Springs bring minerals to the surface and distribute them through the tributaries of the planet's circulatory system. A watercourse brings green to the ground and refreshes us with its scent. Lakes give nourishment by storing water, heat, and chemicals in high places that are otherwise arid.

The salt density in our blood is similar to that of the ocean, whose pitch-black depths call us back to the primordial womb that gave us birth. Here subtle energy generates the vital force of life out of the yin darkness. The swiftness of the riptide and the slow undulations of the deeper currents are part of the Earth's intensive rhythms.

Malleable and permeable, water unites. All movements are part of this element. The spinning of the Earth's axis creates the Coriolis force, twisting the oceanic currents to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern. The resulting spiral - carrying the chaos of sand and sea - generates subtle energy that vitalizes all life systems.

As oxygen and blood mix in our veins, so the trade winds set the North Equatorial currents in motion, the great stream deflected by the spin of the Earth. This colossal, reverberating sea circulates the force of life from continent to continent, creating weather from its cyclonic eddies.

Earth:  The earth element is the most physical, the most formed and rigid. Rocks hold the Earth's memory - as in the fossilized protozoa and other simple life-forms contained in layers of limestone. Lying deeper are the slates born of clay, and deeper still, the glittering micashists, and gneiss. The primal rock is granite - composed of quartz, feldspar, and hornblende. The igneous rocks - granite, porphyry, greenstones, basalt and lava - break through the sandstone and limestone layers during volcanic eruptions. These diverse derivatives and structures of the Earth derive from their contrasting interactions with water and fire. The story of the planet is the story of elemental conflict and regeneration through the undulations of time. In the earth element are buried seeds of all things, awaiting a new birth.

Plate tectonics reveal the Earth's skeletal and muscular system. Without these chiropractic adjustments to maintain harmony between structure and movement, cataclysmic Earth changes would result.

Ether:  Comprised of the eternal fusion of subtle energy and light, the etheric element permeates consciousness as well as the body of the Earth. The timeless etheric celebrates the unchanging and the changing. All landscapes, all elements, all forms live in this formless sea. Withdrawn, ether draws out everything to be itself. Invisible, it makes all things visible. Intangible, it touches all.

Note: The ancient idea of all-permeating ether or akasha was interpreted by Dr. Franz Anton Mesmer as a psychic fluid in which planets could create tides or flows of subtle energy. As a healer, he knew that illness resulted when the flows of subtle energy currents in the body were interrupted, thus depleting vital force.
