What Is A Witch? Witchcraft, Spellwork and Magic

Magic is part of our spiritual life

A witch practicing magicIn the not too distant past I had to “explain myself” to a person who did not in any manner believe in Magic. My interaction with this person led me to compose this hub. Without giving specifics, the person pretty much simply said that she did not believe in Magic and nothing I could tell her would make her believe it worked.

Overall, she stated a very true fact. Magic will not work if you are not open to it to work. If you accept the possibility and still don't believe it, Magick can open some doors for you. A person who does not believe in the ways of Magic, or is too aggravated with those who do, such as us witches, will never actually have Magic change anything about their lives. Magic defined to me is Energy and Life, those things that live are filled with the energy of Life; whether it consciously knows, truly believes, or fully denies the possibility of Magic, the spirit that resides within the object is still affected by Magic.

With most people who are "non-magical" the problem arises from the idea that the world is binary along with the Christian brainwashing that goes on. The overall concept of the binary world is where only the Being who created and the Being who can destroy the creation use Magic to create change. Then it is only good when that Magic comes from the creator, and if it is bad, it has to come from the one who destroys. Much along the lines of many of the most political and widely accepted religious paths. This tends to work well to manipulate the masses.

For those on the various Pagan Paths there are two worlds that make up our lives. There is the material and physical world that simultaneously coexists with the spiritual world, which also is the world of energy, the world of Magic. When we take a walk through the mountains, we see the physical world with earth, rocks, trees, rivers, and the animals; however, we also see the spiritual concepts that these wonderful physical things are made of. It is normal to view this world and to coexist in this world; in fact, the minute we are born into this world we are completely opened to the True World. As we slowly learn more about the “Real World”, we do so fully missing of the natural abilities or instincts that we were born with. When this happens there is a disconnection within our being and a knowing that something is missing, however we cannot place our finger on it.

When a witch starts out on their path, they encounter a lot of information that has to be learned and put into practice, a lot of reading, much thinking, meditating, as well as writing that needs to be completed before you really began to comprehend just what you were doing. No matter how confusing this all seemed to us, we continued to move forward, being rewarded as we fine-tuned the basic skills that are used within the Craft. The abilities to raise power, work with the various correspondences for gemstones, herbs and candles are gained. Most of us have used the Runes, a pendulum or read the Tarot for additional abilities gained.

Overall for those of us who are a witch, well we had to take the time to think about this path and way of life and place effort and energy into it. We had to learn and master the skills, as well as work on achieving the correct philosophy and spiritual condition to make them work for us. Our education is equivalent to a person getting a degree in a vocational field. You have to set time aside, being dedicated, and continuing your education keeping an open mind and heart to new ideas, concepts, workings and more, adding to their knowledge base. In a nutshell you have to have the dedication, time and the desires.

Footnote: Yes, men as well as women can be a witch.
